Division Information
The St. Albert Sr. Cardinals play in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association, a collection of eight teams consisting of players aged 30 years old and over in the greater Edmonton area.
Prior to the 2009 season the club was known as the Royals, but has recently undergone a name change, which we feel more closely aligns the team with the tradition and legacy of baseball in
St. Albert. The club consists of players with varying degrees of backgrounds in the sport from the recreational level to college baseball in the United States. Some of our players have played in the Sunburst League, including a few that have taken the field with the Tigers here in
St. Albert.
Through the years the club has been involved in many aspects of the game in
St. Albert . We built the original deck around the clubhouse at
Legion
Park , including cement pilings, bobcat work, arranging the donation of concrete, and an estimated 600 man-hours of work. The club also built the storage shed, as well as donating team money to the cause and volunteered to help construct the PeeWee diamond. And perhaps most importantly many of our current and former players have volunteered as coaches for SAMBA through the years, including Greg Reiniger, who is currently the Bantam AAA head coach.
In 2007
St. Albert won the “B” side championship and in 2008 finished in the first tier before being eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual league champion, the Spruce Grove Eagles. In addition to St. Albert and Spruce Grove there are three teams based in Edmonton (the Blues, the Heat and the Expos), one team in Stony Plain (the Codgers), one team in Wabuman (the Whiskey Jacks) and this season there will be a team based in Fort Saskatchewan.
The Cardinals play home games on Monday nights at Legion Memorial Ball Park. Games begin at 6:45 PM and admission is free for baseball fans interested in watching some veteran players, who still love playing the game.
